Listen Up: A Curated Series by Portland Radio Project and Artichoke Music
Amplifying Pacific Northwest Women & Non Binary Singer/Songwriters
A monthly series from Portland Radio Project along with Portland’s premier acoustic and singer/songwriter listening room, Artichoke Music. Portland Radio Project is handing the microphone over to female and non-binary singer/songwriters emerging in the Pacific Northwest, for a rich evening of independent voices and powerful stories.
THE LINEUP:
Alex Whiler:
Alex Whiler is a mix of Hayley Williams and Lana del Rey…for moms! Combining a deep love for ballads and standards, exploring indie rock and pop instrumentation, and lyrics that evoke authenticity and depth, Alex’s songs are for the faint of heart. But they won’t leave you that way.
After being raised on Celine Dion, Jewel, and Ella Fitzgerald, Alex turned to opera as her main musical pursuit. While in the classical world, she never considered her own story worth telling until she left opera and spent a season of heartbreak and clarity hiking the PCT. Processing that experience led to an outpouring of songs that would become her first EP, Look Me in the Eye, released in 2020.
Alex’s music is made to walk with you through your mundane days and stand still moments, giving you space to feel it all, and show you it will be okay. Perhaps even beautiful. Because after all, everything—good or bad—only lasts a while. (https://www.alexwhiler.com)
Sonder:
Sonder is a Portland-based duo - Rachael Curtin and Justine Renee - who have found themselves at home in harmony together. While they are debuting as Sonder in 2023, they have been singing backing vocals with local band Mama Sam and the Jam since 2018. Their music blends story-telling with the emotional processing of life and they hope to come across as honest, heartfelt, and resonating.
Ali Boyce:
Ali writes pop-influenced folk music with an emphasis on luscious vocal melodies and self-reflective storytelling. She has been performing for over 20 years on professional and ramshackle stages, as a musical theater performer, a puppeteer, and a singer-songwriter. She is also a vocal coach and a craniosacral therapist. (https://www.aliboycevoice.com)
