Since the late 1960s a uniquely Irish version of the Greek bouzouki has become commonplace in traditional music far beyond Ireland and the British Isles. At the same time, interest in other larger mandolin-family instruments like the octave mandolin or the cittern (usually with 10 strings) has increased all over the world in recent decades, even becoming more prominent in mainstream music. These instruments make a fine addition to any guitar player's arsenal of sounds but also are capable of becoming a rich solo or accompaniment instrument in their own right. This class is for any 8 string octave mandolin or bouzouki that can be tuned GDAD. We will explore chords and scales, counter-point and harmony, talk about the main modes used in traditional music and focus on how to utilize the unique multi-string tone and texture of the OM/Bouzouki to your best advantage. No previous background in the instrument required.
