The members of our staff include:

Richard Colombo

Co-owner of Artichoke Music, Executive Director of Artichoke Community Music (non-profit), musician, folksinger & teacher

Richard picked up his first guitar at the age of twelve and has been playing and singing ever since. His first career―as a kindergarten teacherbegan in the 1970s. Ever a musician, he delighted in incorporating music, song, movement and improvisation into his classes.

Professional Musician in the Bay Area

Richard's professional music career began in the early 1980s when he started performing in coffeehouses and clubs in the San Francisco Bay area. He later formed a duo with Miche Evans called "Richard and Miche." In 1982 the singer-songwriter duo recorded and produced its debut album, Take a Chance, on Daphne Records. Consisting of all original music, the album led to a busy performing schedule, and Richard and Miche soon became mainstays in the Bay Area folk music scene.

Moving to Portland

Richard moved to Portland in 1985, where he continued to perform as a solo artist as well as in duos. In 1991 he enrolled in the music program at Portland State University to study classical guitar and earn a B.A. in Music. Returning to music school as an adult and accomplished musician gave Richard the confidence to push his own musical limits and explore new ideas. This led to the release of his CD, Carry the Dream, which consists of twelve original instrumental songs for guitar.

Founding Artichoke Community Music with Partner Jim Morris

In 1994, Richard opened his own music studio in Southeast Portland, teaching guitar, music theory and songwriting. About three years ago, he also began leading the weekly Song Circle at Artichoke Music.

In late 2006, Richard and his partner, Jim Morris, decided to take over the Artichoke Music School, Backgate Stage concert venue, and weekly Song Circle from its owners, Steve Einhorn and Kate Power. After careful consideration, they (ably assisted by some passionate volunteers and supporters) decided to turn this part of Artichoke Music into a nonprofit organization that would focus on building music community one heart at a time.

In January 2007, Jim and Richard also purchased the Artichoke retail store from Steve and Kate.

Bringing Joy into People's Lives Through Music

Richard loves his work and feels blessed that music is his life. He is committed to building community through music because he believes it can break down barriers, has the power to heal and transform the human experience, and can create positive change in the world. Whether he is teaching one-on-one or performing to a large group in a concert hall, an intimate coffeehouse, or a group of children, Richard delights in seeing the joy that music brings into people's lives.

Jim Morris

Co-owner of Artichoke Music, founding board member of Artichoke Community Music, back office guy, & guitar player

Most evenings, you will find Jim in the back office at Artichoke, buried in accounting and computer issues. On the weekends and holidays, you will find him behind the counter or participating in board meetings for Artichoke Community Music.

In addition to all of the work he does for Artichoke, Jim keeps a day job to insure the rent gets paid! He has dinked around with guitar for years, but his involvement at Artichoke has thrust him into the music community in a big way.

Danielle Schultz

Office Manager, artist, dancer, massage therapist & banjo player

Not only does Danielle hold Artichoke together through her wonderful work in the office, but she is also an artist, dancer, massage therapist and amazing banjo player!

As Office Manager, Danielle supports the entire operation of Artichoke Music. From the office to the retail floor, she brings her skills and positive approach to everything she does. Artistic, bright and a born dancer, Danielle is a rose among artichoke leaves!

Dan'l McIlhenny

If you have ever been into our wonderful store at a time Dan'l is working, you will remember it. He most likely told you passionately about our mission, gave you a tour of "the best listening room in the Pacific Northwest", and made sure you left with a button and a bumper sticker (and a smile on your face). Dan'l is the best ambassador this place could ever hope to find. He also happens to be a first-rate singer / songwriter.
