This class will focus on the guitar style of the great French Gypsy Jazz guitarist, Django Reinhardt. We will examine many of his compositions and improvisations, and both rhythm (la pompe) and leads. This class will be presented and taught by Tracy Kim, who has studied and performed this style for the past 20 years.
Tracy will reveal Django's unique technique and visualization of the fretboard. He will also demonstrate his colorful 'special effects' and flavors (scales, embellishments, arpeggios, etc) that create this beautiful sound of gypsy jazz.
Tracy has hand-picked seven songs that he will teach note-for-note at a very friendly tempo to demonstrate many of these techniques described above:
Sweet Georgia Brown
This approach can also be applied to any style of music or to anyone who wants to increase their fretboard knowledge. Unsolve the mystery of creating the 'French' sound with lush swinging chords and of course, his beautiful melodic single note lines.
For guitarists, Tracy will supply tabs for all songs, exercises, licks, and techniques. Some basic guitar skills are recommended. For non-guitar players, standard notation will be used as well. Mandolin tab will also be supplied for mandolinists.
This class is perfect for anybody who is interested in getting started in playing gypsy jazz or swing.
Besides learning Gypsy Jazz vocabulary, you will be learning how and what to practice while having fun learning tunes of the repertoire. Tracy will give you details in his practice techniques and an approach to learning what seems to be an intimidating style.
